Rene Gagnon was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1925. He joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima. On February 23, 1945, Gagnon was one of the six men who raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, an event captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal. This moment became a symbol of hope and perseverance during the war and has inspired countless individuals since.

Professionally framed display featuring a cut signed by WWII U.S. Marine Rene Gagnon. Gagnon was one of the second group of Marines who raised the flag on top of Mount Surabachi during the battle of Iwo Jima famously captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal. Rosenthal's photo has become one of the most recognized and famous photos in history. After the Battle of Iwo Jima, Gagnon, Ira Hayes and James Bradley were removed from battle and put on a War Bond tour throughout the United States. Gagnon died in 1979. The signature is authenticated by PSA #J33475.
