Gagnon was one of the second group of Marines who raised the flag on top of Mount Surabachi during the battle of Iwo Jima famously captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal. After the Battle of Iwo Jima, Gagnon, Ira Hayes and James Bradley were removed from battle and put on a War Bond tour throughout the United States. Gagnon died in 1979.
